We know it’s the season to be thankful, but some of us are having a hard time getting there! (Not a shocker, considering everything that has transpired in 2020.) If you’re struggling to feel chipper this season, don’t be too hard on yourself, because it’s not your fault! Neuroscience research suggests that our aptitude for gratitude is innate, in our genes. However, research also suggests that we can develop an attitude of gratitude by building our gratitude muscle!
Why all this talk about gratitude? We want you to feel amazing! Positive psychology studies abound showing that people who have an attitude of gratitude tend to be healthier, happier and live longer. Fortunately, gratitude is like a muscle: you can strengthen it with the right exercises.
Here are a few clinically supported exercises to try:
Start a gratitude list.
Research on people who do regular gratitude journaling has shown this practice helps boost mood, longevity and a sense of well-being. But if journaling sounds a bit overwhelming to you, we recommend jotting down a list of things you’re grateful for; it can be on any random scrap of paper, it doesn’t matter where you scribble your list. The whole point is to train your brain to think about things you are grateful for. Every time you write a gratitude thought down, you are training your brain to think about gratitude! And like any skill, the more you practice, the better you get!
Just do it.
Don’t feel grateful? Then act your way into gratitude! What do grateful people do? They smile, act courteous and are generous by giving up their seat for people, letting people cut in line, etc. They practice patience and tolerance at home… Research shows that doing good deeds helps you feel better, so you can act grateful even if you aren’t feeling it, and chances are you’ll start feeling grateful! It’s like magic!
Put yourself first.
This sounds counterintuitive, but you need to take care of yourself to keep your stress levels in check so you can feel better in general. In other words, it’s hard to feel gratitude if you’re totally spent, right? You can perk yourself up by taking care of yourself. What brings you joy? Getting skin treatments or buying a new product?
